Graceland - Part One

On our way to New Orleans, we drove through Memphis to see the birthplace of our beloved "King of Rock n' Roll".  It was pretty much exactly how we imagined. Very southern. Very extravagant. Very Elvis.

Because we were visiting during Christmas, we had the great pleasure of being greeted by this:

A giant Nativity. The same one Elvis put out every year.

This was our first look at the mansion. We were a little surprised to see how much smaller it looked in person. Despite the cheesy lion statues, it's a very beautiful house.

Upon entering, we were welcomed in by a tour guide. First stop...the living room!

Ahhh, the 1970s

Quite possibly the longest sofa in existence.
The stairs in this home are very unique. Each staircase feels like its own little room within a room.

This one was completely covered in mirrors! I was intrigued.
These next few rooms were my favorites.

The basement. Complete with three television sets.
We figured out very quickly that this guy liked things in excess.

The Jungle Room. The acoustics in this room were so good that Elvis reecorded a whole album here!
Perhaps all that shag carpet had something to do with it?

The guest room. This is where Elvis' parents stayed.
I think of all the rooms in the house, this one stands the test of time.  Very "Hollywood Regency".
There are pieces in here that I would use in my own room if I could.

Tomorrow's post will give you a look at our tour outside the mansion, including a glimpse at the Presley's toys!
